Digital X-Ray Technology

With all the new changes in technology there are some exciting developments at Woodland Veterinary Hospital. We have upgraded our x-ray machine to a digital machine that is linked to a computer system. This new radiograph technology uses the same x-ray beam to capture an image digitally that is then routed to a computer screen for viewing. The benefits of this technology are several fold. One of the biggest benefits is that we will have the ability to send these images electronically to our Board Certified Radiologists to review them and get interpretation results back in 24 hours or less. The technology also gives us the ability to change the image quality to lighten or darken the radiograph to see different aspects of the image without having to retake the picture. This ability to decrease re-take images helps cut down on x-ray exposure to your pet and our nursing staff. Because the image is captured and viewed on the monitor almost instantly, if the patient moves or we do not get the view we wanted, the technicians know right away to take another image. Because these radiographic images are digital they can be downloaded to a disc making it easier to send a copy with the client for referral when requested as well. The other big benefit to digital imaging is we no longer need to develop radiographs on x-ray film. This means we are not contributing to the environmental waste with disposal of films that contain lead, and we are not having to dispose of the developing chemicals on a regular basis, many of which are also toxic to the environment and require special disposal. This also cuts out the most time-consuming aspect of taking x-rays, the developing process, allowing quicker diagnosis and treatment of any problems.
